Longhand or Typing – A Writer’s Answer

nlalit.comRecently, I received an interesting question from an avid reader. She wanted to know “how I write my stories”. It was an intriguing query, and therefore I decided to write a blog as a reply. I will break this post into three parts.

1. Three ways of writing a fiction book.
2. Advantages and disadvantages of longhand.
3. Advantages and disadvantages of using a computer / laptop.

So, let’s get started.

The three ways of writing a manuscript is longhand, which simply means writing done by hand, usually with a pen or pencil. The second way of transferring your story from your head to readable format is computer / laptop. The third option is actually a combination of both. I prefer the last method. Let me explain this concept.

Unlike many writers I have this habit of scribbling the outline of my book. This includes the climax. I write scenes instead of chapters, a quality inherited over the years from writing film scripts. When I am through I transfer these scenes into a word processor, and then expand these individual cards / scenes / chapters. In short I exploit longhand as well as computer.

Additionally, most writers own a diary where they either jot down or insert sticky notes when a compelling twist in the plot or a new idea strikes them. I also believe that each method has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Mentioned below are some of those.

Writing a novel using computer / laptop –

Advantages

1. Minimal spelling mistakes, punctuation errors and editing … post completion.
2. Typing is much faster than writing.
3. Creating multiple copies is quick and hassle free.
4. Storage is a breezy affair. Documents on hard disk / SSD’s are not prone to wear and tear and fading.
5. Extremely easy to edit. No messy underlines / strike through or rewritten words.
6. Availability of thesaurus and internet connection provides amazing literary options and inspiration.

Disadvantages

1. Writers tend to go overboard while typing. Unnecessary additions or information dump becomes rampant which can be a nuisance post completion.
2. Bland and banal white screen doesn’t really offer a creative environment. On the other hand yellow legal pad or loose leaf paper can provide unmatched simulation.
3. These days computers / laptops are connected to the internet 24 X 7. This translates into distraction. The urge to check mail, login to Facebook for a quick peek or listen to music reduces productivity.

Writing a book using longhand –

Advantages

1. Studies have proved that longhand offers a unique advantage of remembering written words / information for a longer period.
2. Writers can scribble, draw, paint, create arcs or sub-plots and thereby reduce monotony and loneliness.
3. Longhand infuses inspiration, stirs creativity.
4. It forces writers to come up with better ideas / words / sentences as you are not rushing things.
5. Keeps the mind and brain sharp, and therefore structural and developmental faults can be picked up early on.

Disadvantages

1. It takes quite a while to finish a book.
2. Making copies and storage is cumbersome.
3. Increased spelling mistakes, incorrect sentence structure, and faulty punctuation are some of the inherent drawbacks of longhand.
4. Enhanced editing post completion.

I hope this answers your question my friend!
