Sequel – The joy and travails

nlalit.comSequels are written / developed for literary, performing and visual arts. A sequel is an extended story, a continuation to a prequel. However, it could also be a new story/mission with the same set of characters that have evolved over a period of time. One of the popular subjects in sequels is the return of ‘conflict’ which forces the protagonist into action once again.

A sequel is tricky to accomplish, and it also demands intelligent planning. Mentioned below are some of its inherent drawbacks.

FROM READERS POINT ON VIEW –

Until and unless you are a famous author you have to inform your readers about the characters, plot points and relationships in a way which does not put off others – those who have already read the prequel. This requires some skill. The writer also needs to balance between “Going overboard” and “Providing insufficient information”. Lack of background information can confuse a ‘sequel’ reader.

Many readers shun sequels because of the rise of “Old” conflict, entry of new characters and possibly change of voice.

Secondly, readers have already experienced the highs and lows of the protagonist in a prequel and therefore making them undergo new ordeal and ecstasy with the same passion becomes a fairly daunting task.

Note – The above concerns do not apply to book series where each work is based on a common story arc. Book Series typically share the same setting, characters and timeline. On the other hand a trilogy is a set of three literary works which could be one long piece or individual stories.

MARKETING –

Marketing strategy also needs to be improvised for a sequel. It means advertising two books instead of one. Readers have to be informed and enlightened about the plot line of the current book along with certain inputs from the earlier release. If a sequel is written after a long time it becomes all the more frustrating for the writer as well as the reader. The overall publicity task turns into a complex affair.

CURRENT SCENARIO –

On the brighter side, readers love extended versions of good literary works, especially when the author has proved his/her mettle in this arena.
