I write articles/blog/web content for several IT and non-IT companies – a writer’s strategy to offset inflation and falling interest rates, and also to supplement monthly income. After all writers are human beings. Even they possess similar vices and virtues. To cut the long story short writing fiction doesn’t pay the bills or replace obsolete computer. Not all writers are millionaires, and hence that extra effort!
Now, getting writing gigs is also a task in itself. It simply means visiting the client or agencies that provide assignments to people like me. Last week, I was called by the brand advisor of a large hospitality business group to write content for them. Over unlimited rounds of tea, several arguments, and a couple of breaks I clinched the deal.
After the meeting ended, and I shook hands with the attendees, the mentor walked me to the door. I thanked him profusely and shook hands once again. Before parting he said something which reflected the lighter side of his personality.
‘You said you write fiction and non-fiction … I assume you mean fiction books and technical stuff,’ he said, eyebrows arched high, forming two perfect bows, the resemblance enhanced by his bushy hair.
‘Yes,’ I said, nodding my head, ‘Although non-fiction also includes other literary variations.’
‘Well, you have to understand that we service real people and real wants. I hope you switch hats before writing for us … don’t pen down something which we are unable to offer. Your protagonist can, but we cannot,’ he said with a crooked grin.
I smiled at his apprehension which I knew was just his way of breaking the ice further. However, that didn’t stop me from mulling over his observation on my way back home.
